A Tree Sparrow photographed by Chris Wilson. The Tree Sparrow is a member of the Sparrow family. It is smaller than a House Sparrow and more active, with its tail almost permanently cocked. It has a chestnut brown head and nape, and white cheeks and collar with a contrasting black cheek-spot. They are shyer than House Sparrows and don't tend to nest in buildings as often although they do in continental Europe. They can be all year round, best seen in hedgerows and woodland edges. They feed on seeds and insects
